Just got out of the hospital. Found out I have cancer.
This is what happen today when they released me after 3 days in Hermann hospital and one day in. Tomball hospital.
Have you ever called for something free and found out later there was a charge. Or clicked on something free on the internet only to be re-directed to a place to enter your credit card number? That best describes my experience at Houston Hermann Hospital.
My nurse came into my room and told me I was going to be discharged. So I asked her could I talk to someone to find out about my health. Looking kind of puzzled, she finally said she would get a hold of the doctor and have her come by. So my nurse called the primary doctor in who's care I was under. She came into my room with a phone and a big smile. ( the nurses there were the best ever) the doctor told me I had cancer and that I needed to see another kind of doctor. So I need to get their gold card and then call and make an appointment with the doctor on the list. I asked if she could give me an idea how my health was. I have some des ions to make. She simply told me she was not qualified to tell me that. I told her how I have not even seen the film of the CT. Test. Is it a big tumor or a small. Again she repeated " I'm sorry I am not qualified to say. Just get the gold card and then see this specialist. Can I answer any more questions, my money is on no I said. She asked what and I told her thank you and have a good day.
My nurse asked what she said and I told her. She said don't leave yet I will get someone to talk to you. After an hour went by, here she came. Introduced Linda to me she let me ask a couple of question then she responded with. Your number one priority is the gold card then go see this specialist. Then asked if I had anymore questions.
I responded: ok I think I understand now. Soon as I get the gold card then I can get my questions answered. And if I do not get a gold card I will not find out how my health is. She kind of shrugged her shoulders and agreed. That's when I stood up and asked if I was discharged yet, she smiled and said yes you can leave now. I thanked her. I said I think I have heard enough and I am ready to leave...

Go to the medical records department. Tell them you want all reports and images to bring to your primary care doctor. You will be surprised how much you will learn from the reports when you get them. I had to find references on the computer to understand some things but it was a eye opening experience after a week in the hospital how much they didn't say that was on the reports. My PCCare doctor didn't know I was in the hospital for a week and almost died. He kept saying he would send for the reports to read them but didn't. I found a few things that I needed to follow up on that had been recommended that my doctor never did because of his inability to get the records and read them. I have a new doctor now. I brought the reports, images and lab reports and had him explain it all to me,. You will be seeing many doctors maybe and you need to have a record at home of everything anyway so that you have a reference of what has and haven't been done. Go get the records.
